Owing to an oversight, the Avondale Cup handicap started 21b lighter than required by the rules of racing. In order to rectify the mistake Gladstone was raised to 9.0, Paritutu 8.12. The remainder of the handicaps are unaltered.
, Wairoa, yesterday. At, a largely-attended public meeting a resolution was carried drawing the . attention of the Government, to the fact that no land is to be obtained in the district for close settlement, all land not under native ownership being held in large blocks., The meeting called on the Government to acquire one or more large estates close to town for close settlement.
FeUding, last night. The residence of Mrs J, Younger, Cinder Hill, was totally destroyed by fire yesterday morning. The occupants were unable to save anything but the piano. The insurances on the house were £l5O in the Phoenix, and on the furniture £l5O in the Manchester. A shock of earthquake was felt at 7-22 last evening. >■,
