£SOO ACCRUES TO INSTITUTION A meeting of the Hospital Bocial committee was held in the Borough Counoil Chambers last evening to reoeive accounts in connection with the recent function. There was a large attendance, His Worship the Mayor presiding. The secretary, Mr T. G. Lawless, gave tho following address “In presenting the accounts of the annual Hospital social, it is a matter for general, and indeed I may say very special, congratulation that the financial proceeds of this year’s gathering is a very substantial increase on the receipts of last year. It is most encouraging to note that a very evidently increasing interest is being taken in this most necessary and laudable institution, and no doubt as time goes on these annual gatherings will serve to continuously and materially increase that interest. There
are few, if any, who fail to recognise the importance of a publio hospital, and are ever ready to give expression to their sympathy in connection therewith. Bat, on the other hand, there are great numbers of people who have little or no conoeption of the weighty general expenses that such an institution involves. With all respect, I submit that the greater part of our people require some pduoation on this point, whioh would no doubt bavo the effeot of eliciting from them a still larger and still further practical expression of their sympathy by their financial support. The annual social this year was held under some adverse conditions, both in regard to the exceedingly inclement woatber, the stoppage of the railway (caused by a slip on the line), and powerful counter attractions, Yet notwithstanding these drawbacks, whioh happily proved to be more apparent than real, both the adult and juvenile socials constituted as a whole a most unqualified success. The financial statement presented shwoed a surplus of £245 10s Id. The question of a donation to the City and Gisborne Rifles Band was considered, and on the motion of Mr Harding the sum of £8 8s was voted to eaoh. A bonus of £5 5s was also granted to Mr H.
