PERILOUS EXPERIENCE.
PARTY BOGGED IN MID-STREAM.
A coaching party bad a perilous ad. venture on Mooday when returning to Weikino from Waihi beacb, where they had been spending the day. They left their camping ground about five o’clook. When negotiating a tidal crossing at Bowentown the brake got out of the usual oourse, and stuck fast in soft sand. The brake was then half.way oyer the crossing, the tide was racing in, and the passengers were in imminent danger of being swept into the bay by the treacherous ourrent which exists at this partioulariplaoe. All efforts to get the brake free failed. Luckily at this time a boat was seen on the otbor side, and one of the passengers plunged in, and making the journey safely,.brought out the boat and resoued the now tho. roughly affrightened occupants of the i swamping brake. Attention was then paid to the horses, who were in danger of drowning in a rapidly rising tide. With great difficulty they were released, all getting ashore safely. The brake was abandoned meanwhile. The party walked to Athenree, and messages were sent ,to Waihi, with the result that a relief coaoh was immediately despatched, and the party arrived home at a late hour. It is stated that the driver' missed the proper crossing, and got into one of the many soft patohes which abound in the vicinity. The current is very swift, and the entire brake load of passengers might easily have been drowned had there not been a boat available. Tbo brake oontained some 80 passengers.
