Wanganui, last night. Mr R. M. Gatsnby was to-day nominated for tbe Wanganui seat. At a speoial meeting of the Harbor Board to-day JUr Leslie Reynolds’ proposals re improvement of tbo harbor were considered. It was resolved that tbe Board at once proceed with the oonstruotion of a training wall along the line of the south spit. The estimated coat of this work'is £11,953. • ■
, Christchuroh, last night. At the Supremo Court to-day Alfred Homes Palmer was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment for attempted rape. The libel action Canon Pollook against Bishop Julius was discontinued to-day. To-day J. R. Lcunt was nomioated for Avon, J. Ivess for Selwyn, H. G. Ell for Christchurch South, and A. W. Rutherford and 0. F. Clotbier for Hurunui. A writ for slander and defamation of character has been issued against a resident of Harewood road, on behalf of Mr T. H. Caverhill, one of the candidates fur Riccarton. The alleged slander consists in a statement said to have been made to the effect that Mr Caverhill’s resignation from the bank was brought about through drunkenness. Mr Caverhill claims that there has never been a suspicion that he was intemperate at any period of his life, and that he' has been a total abstainer for over eleven years, having first become a teetotaller as an example to the Kaiapoi football team when training them for the senior championship, which they won under his managementin 1894, Defendant was afforded tbo option of apologising, but did not avail himself of it,
Wellington, last night. Mr Seddon addressed a political meeting this evening at Greytown in defence of the Government polioy. He had a very cordial reception from the audience. This part of the electorate is Mr Bucbauan’s stronghold. At the conclusion of the address, which was on the lines of previous speeches, the audience sang, ‘‘ For he’s a jolly good fellow.” William Alexander, of Glasgow, has been seleated by the High Commissioner and Dr Garnett, su.snary to the Technical Sohool Board of the London County Council, for the position of meobanical engineering instructor to the Wellington Technical School.
A formal enquiry was held by the Collector of Customs to day into the groundingiof the steamer Zealandia at Napier on Thursday. The evidence tended to show that there was a breakdown of communication between the bridge aud the engineroom. ‘J ' -• ' ■
Dunedin, last night.' The weather was better for the second day of the A. and P. Society’s Show, but it was far from being-ideal. There was a good attendance, tho takings being f 485, a considerable increase on last year, de* spite the fact of some popular attractions being done away with. In draught horses Patrick’s Pride of Newton secured the championship for entire and Grey Bros.’s Nellie Grey for mare. In carriage horses Tyrone was first, and in hackneys Royal Stranger. In connection with the show the Clydesdale colt Baron Fyvie, just imported by Mr R. Irving, juni\, was sold to Messrs Hall and Gardiner, of North Otago, for 1200 guineas. . ‘
