(Copy.) PROHIBITION IN MATAURA. To the Editor, Mataura Ensign. Sir,—We call this a prohibition distjiot, but it is so only in name. Why should we prevent drink being sold here, when the law allows it to come into the district like any cqmmo'dity ? ' Take this town (Mataura) for instance Som e eay it haa done good to sey- ral “ old topers.” ’ I grant it fcas fo a certain extent, but evop they may h° seen now and then the worse for liquor. But what I deplore most is the number of young fellows who have gone in for drinking heavily sinoe prohibition was carried, ruining themselves fast, body and soul. There are many in this place who band together and. get liquor, and then spend a night, yea two or three nights, in debauoh ery in huts or out of the way plaoes. Were the pa’ents respectable popple, to be told this they would not believp it. To-night t had occasion to go to, a Government office on j busine ; s, and though there was a light in fie office the door was locked B fore iho door was opened I was questioned as to who I was. When I was admitted to an atmosphere thiok with smoke, there was the unmistakable odour of liquor. A* no pne seems inclined to say anything publicly and try and prevent the ruin of these young fellows, |I beg that you will gra’t mo spaoj in your columns for the above. I am, etc, A. N.
