EXPLOSIVE FATALITY
SCANDALOUS CARELESSNESS. (Per Press Association.) Dunedin, last n : gbt. A lad 18 years of Bg°, named Alfred Lewis, was the victim of an accident at Deborah Bay on December 31st, whiob resulted in his death yesterday. It appears that deceased and another young man were gathtriog some of tbc Ta po explosive which bad been left on the beach when the oompany gave up the manufacture of fhe m-tiria'. D.ceared was putting the explosive in a, bag, whilst Nelson had a lighted match. By some means the bag caught fire, and the explosive severely burned Lewis. Dr Borrie dd what ho oouli, but the unfortunate young man died at 5 a m yesterday. An inquest was held this morning. The evidence disclosed that a quantity of Taipo had been carted and thrown on the beaob at Grassy Po’nt,
and had boon pickod up by soveral persons. The jury returned a vordiefc that death was due to shock, caused by severe burns frohT .this Talpo explosive. They added a rider 'that gross oarelessness bpl bejn exeroisedin disposing of the explosive; and that the authorities should tike action to discover by,whose authority it was placed within theyreach of 'afi and sundry not knowing j the "danger of the explosive; also that ; immediate steps bo taken to destroy the ; remainder,
