At Waitou on Christmas Day a married woman named Ada Laura Fisher was oooking the Christmas dinner oulside the house, when her clothing oaught fire. The woman’s soioatns wore hoard by hor busband, who quickly extinguished the flames, but tho woman was so sovoroly burnt that sho succumbed. There was a olose finish in the final of tho Chess Congress, with several sensations. Miles unexpectedly beat Mason, whose bid for the ohatnpionship was consequently assailed by whoover won the Barnes v. Griorson game. This game was stubbornly contested, and at the end Grioreoo battled hard for a draw. Barnes finally won on the 77th move, Daviep, of Wellington, won the umpire’s rapidity prize with an average of lmin 16jeo per move.
