At the Supremo Court this morning a oase, in which a man named Ferguson was oharged with maiming oattle, oame on for fresh trial. The Crown Prosaoutor did not offar evidenoe, acousod having agreed to pay £5 to the owner of the oalves destroyed. His Honor direoted the jury to pass a verdict of not guilty. In discharging the prisoner, his Honor slated that he agreed with the ooureo taken by the Crown. The publio generally- would understand that, however muoh a person was annoyed by strayiog oattle, it did not justify injury being done. They oould only be impounded. The indiscriminate use of pea-rifles was a source of danger to the general publio, and was condemned. His Honor concluded by saying if prisoner committed the offenoe, he had been sufficiently punished by the long trial undergone. During the three days the Court had been sitting, exolasiva of adjournment, Mr Justios Cooper ha 3 sat over ten hours a day. GUILTY OF LARCENY. (Per Press Asaociation.) Hokitika, last night, -ijkt the Supreme Court Leigh Hunt, cSfrg'ed with breaking and entering at Reefton on the 10th October, 1904, was found guilty of laresny only, and sen tenoed to 12 months. This oonolnded the business.
