POLICE METHODS.
,(To the Editor Gisborne Times.)
Sir, —Magistrates, Justices of the Peace, should injure no man, and study that whioh is just. In your report of a oaso in yesterday mornings Issue, one Hori Mokoore was disoovored walking about the streets, and, booausehorestedonadcorstep after walking for two days, was arrested and incarcerated as a criminal in the lockup under the txouse of being a vagrant. The wise and the intellectual Justioes of the Peace approved of the action. I ask, did it not occur to them that the goal was no place for him, hiving done no wroog, insulted, ur injured anyone that he should be oast into the position of a oriminal. Only for tho kind actions of Mr 0. Ferris, the man would probably bave been committed to the Napier gaol for a term of imprisonment tnrough the indiscretion and oifioiousness of a oonstable. Of late them has been too much of this dutystruck principle of tbe police in our di • trioi, and it is about time they should follow the advice of Judge Hawkins (Lord Brampton) in his address in a bock de- I livered lo them by the Commissioners’ of Poiioe, compiled by Hansard, that it is tbeir duty “ not to mike orirne, but to prevent it.” I have myself seen and experienced this pertinacious treatment by two of the members, and I can assure you that what I assert did not occur in the Albion lano. —I am, eto.,
D. MURRAY. Gisborne, Maroh 136 b, 1906. [The concluding pordon of our correspondent’s letter makes ohjrges against certain members of the police force, and it a matter for the Inspector to investigate.—Ed. Times |
