The Department of Industries and Commerce received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, August -Ith : “ Tlierc is a good demand for all lamb. Competition amongst holders to clear stocks has lowered values slightly. The average price of Canterbury brands is 4,(c1, other than Canterbury 4 ,hi. The mutton market is dull and weak. Light-weight Canterbury brands arc scarce, and are quoted at 3 Jd, heavy weights selling at 3„d. The average price of best quality North Island is ibid; second-class quality is quoted at 3,',d. The beef market is steady at last quotations. The butter market is linn, with an upward tendency. Choice New Zealand brands arc scarce at 108 s per cwt: Danish is quoted at Has, Irish 107 s, Canadian 107 s per cwt The cheese market is steady. New Zealand stocks are exhausted. Canadian makes are selling at .78s per ewt. The hemp market is quiet, and there is small business doing at about the same prices as cabled last week. There is a poor demand for cocksfoot seed at 46s per owl. The shipments of meat f om the liivcr Plate during July were as follows: Mutton, Liverpool 1-13,-2011, Hull. 19,873, Newcastle 10,01-3, Southampton 3361, Cardil'l' 13,127. London 143,937, total carcases 322,717: lamb, Liverpool 8200, Hull 1137, Cardil'l' 1879, South aiupton 293, London 12,607, total carcases 10,114. The average price of liivcr Plate mutton is 3|d: lamb from the same country is quoted at 4 Jd.
