Poverty Bay Caledonian Society.

ANNUAL BALL,

His Majesty’s Theatre was the scene of a bright and attractive gathering laet evening on the occasion of the annual ball held in connection with the Poverty Bay Caledonian Booiety. The function, which was of a plain and fancy order, was a distinct Buooess, some of the prettiest fancy costumes Been in tho Bay beiDg worn by the ladies and gentlemen present. Upwards of a hundred couples graced the floor, and the'soene whilst danoing continued was a most animated one. The arrangements made for the gathering were all that could be desired, and refleoted the utmost credit upon tho secrerary, Mr O. F. Lewis, and the members of the committee supporting him. The President of the Scoiety, Dr 0. F. Scott, was present throughout the evening, and did all in his power to pro mote the pleasure of the numerous guests. Messrs R. M. Bitrell, Duncan Cameron, J. 0. Nisbett, Ewen OameroD, and J. Fergnsou, vioe-presidents, also did their utmost towards the sucoess os the evening. The musio was in the hands of Miss Moore, whose capable orchestra rendered a most popular selection. Messrs Alex. Mclntyre, A. Murray, and W. Robertson proved moßt efficient pipers, whilst the business of the Masters of Ceremonies was well looked after by Dr C. F. Scott, C. F. Lewis, W. Webb, and R. Robertson, Messrs Nisbett and Hogg were the supper stewards, whilst Messrs Birrell and Hy. Sandlanl attended to all requirements in connection with the refreshment and entertainment department. A peep into the supper ! room was most inviting. In this direction Mr J. Erskine fairly excelled himself. The tables were prettily decorated -with palms, daffodils and other choice flowers, and there was an abundant supply of all the good things that the heart could wish for. A programme of twenty-four dances with several extras was gone through and dancing was continued with spirit until an early hour this morning Tho following are a few of the most prominent costumes: Butterfly, Miss Parnell; Forgetmenot, Mrs G Simeon ; Bat, Mrs Boland; Night, Mrs C. F. Lewis; Highland Lassie, Miss O’Rouke; Magpie, Mrs A. Howard, Fairy Queen, Miss Lunn; Sweet Nell of Old Drury, Miss Ray Rico ; Highland Lassie, Miss B Birrell : Queen of the Roses, Miss O'Dwyer ; Powder and Patches, Mrs H. Simeon; Fire, Mrs S, D McPherson; Queen of Butterflies, Miss Goldsmith; Night, Mrs Ledger; Ye Olden Time, Miss Mollumbey; Little Sailor Lassie, Miss Ethel Birrell; and Night, Mrs Baty. Amongst those in evening dress were Mrs A, Robertson, black silk; Miss L. Robeßsod, peaoh silk ; Mrs V. Sandlant, blue 8 tin and ted roses ; Miss F. Sawyer, he iotrope silk ; Miss Edwards, creme silk blouse, white skirt. Amongst the mast noticeable gentlemen's costumes were the following : Hans the BoatmaD, Mr W. Marflitt ; Admiral, Mr C. F. Lewis; Mahomed, Mr A. C Parnell ; Don Andrie, Mr Ward Thomson ; David Garrick, Mr T. Holdsworth ; Highlander, Mr W. Hogen ; Dick TurpiD, Mr H. Parnell ; Chinaman, Mr N. Goldsmith ; Member of the Royal Household, Mr H. Simeon ; Up to-Date, Mr S. MeMcPherson ; Baby the Flower of the Flock, Mr Witty ; A Man frem the Country, Mr F. R. Rogers.
