A story is current in Kawera that a certain farmer heard a disturbance among his sheep one night some little time hack, and suspecting that dogs were the cause called out for a gun. After some delay his son appeared. “Have you put a charge in?” asked the farmer. “Yes, she’s loaded,” was the reply. Then out from the cover of a hedge bounded a young man, who made record time out of range. The intruder had not come to interfere with the sheep, but on a much more romantic mission. and evidently thought the gun was belntr obtained to protest agair.ot his frequent vists. The performance of Landlock in winning tlio Summer Cup, after his display on the opening day, was an astounding reversal of form, but to none more so than liis connections. On the opening day, in the Trial Handicnp, one mile, with 9.0 on his back, but in a fairly moderate field, he finished absolutely last ; while in the Summer Cup ho led from start to finish over a mile and a quarter run in record time, heating a strong fieid. In the Summer Cup it must bo remembered, Lnndlock only had 7.6, a drop of 221bs ; hut still, even allowing for this, ho ran such a totally different race that it was no wonder the crowd had no difficulty in satisfying the stewards as to his innocence in the matter, while it was hardly likely that Scpats, who was having his first ride since his disqualification was removed, would be so foolish as to take hold of the horse, so the only conclusion that one can arrive at is that the horse has become roguish, and this contention is borne out by his subsequent displays, when ho finished last in each event he contested, stopping immediately anything gqt alongside him,—Star,
