The following has been wired to all Road Boards, etc., by the Minister of Health : “In view of the recrudescence of plague in Sydney, and bearing in mind the constant intercommunication between this colony and New South Wales, it behoves all those in authority to sec that every effort is made in the direction of removing all insanitary conditions. I suggest that a house-to-house inspection should be instituted in all boroughs, that all house refuse should be removed daily, where possible, and that special precautions be taken re vacant sections, as they are often made the dumping grounds for all sorts of refipte, A special effort should ho made towards destroying vermin in and about houses, warehouses, wharves, etc. Careful inspection is made of all passengers landing from that infected part, but as the disease is mainly spread by rats, etc.,' everything should bo done to exterminate these animals. No waste food should bp ]ett about; what cannot be biirictf should be kept in closed pans,” At the recent launch of the Russian armored cruiser Rurik, Mr Albert Vickers, of the firm of Vickers, Sons, and Maxim, tho builders, said that, although part of the prosperity of his firm arose from tho building ol warships and the manufacture of armament, they were ill reality working directly towards tho much-de-sired state of universal peace. Some extremists, lie addled, could only see ono road to that end, and that was absolute disarmament. But nations, like individuals, must bo kept in order, and, just as the police force existed to keep the individual in order, so the armies and navies of the world existed to keep tho nations in order. Until the great cities of the world could be kept in order without police, it seemed to him ridiculous to talk about tho general disarmament of nations.
It appears tliat the oiithmst of rage on the part of Madame Calve which had such important consequences, as relate;] in recent cable messages, occurred upon the stage at Dresden, during a performance of “Carmen,” and arose because the unhappy tenor, the Don Jose of the cast, made some mistake in the last act. The prima donna was so incensed that, without waiting for the curtain, she called the tenor various opprobrious names, and used exceedingly strong language against him. The King of Saxony, who heard it, immediately left the royal box and the theatre, followed by his suite. Next day Madame Calve received a message saying that- the doors of tlie theatre would in. future he closed against her, owing to the insults she had addressed to a Court official. The tenor is a Court official by reason of his performance at the Court theatre. Her tour thus came to a sudden end.. Finally she was ordered to pay £-ISO to M. Scburmann, the manager, for breach of contract arising out- of the “scene.” Titewood: “I thought you said you would not charge me anything for the iittle legal question I asked yon.” Lawyer: “I didn’t; I’ve charged you Jforjhe answer,”;-/;.
