It is painful (says the Western Star) that in Western Australia at! such a time as this the unemployed should be manifest. It throws us, o some extent, into marked and unfavorable contrast with the Eastern States, although, perhaps, their proportion of unemployed is not much less than our own. When the works policy of the Government is in full swing, matters may improve. If the condition of the public finances was more satisfactory, there would, no doubt, be a corresponding improvement in employment. A striking example of how a grain of seed will multiply has occurred on the farm of Mr. Jas. Wylie, of Areegra, South Australia. In 1902 one of his sons secured a handful of Manitoba wheat fropi a friend. Among the seed was a single grain of oats. This was planted and carefully protected, and it grew iiito a fine stalk. The grain was put aside and_ planted +lie following year with satisfactory results. Each succeeding . year the quantity sown has increased, and this harvest a viekl of forty-four bags of oats was obtained. The average was ten hags to the acre, and the result would have been much better but for the fact that a wind storm, broke down portion of the crop. The best yields of Algerian oats are not more titan eight bags to the acre. Mr. Wylie is proud of his achievement.
