RACING IN ENGLAND. The following comments with reference to the opening of the English flat racing season will bo interesting reading—“ Class is distinctly well represented, and nearly all the best handicap winners of last season figure in one or more races, notably Velocity, Polymelus, Dean Swift, Dinneford, and Feather Bed. Roseate Dawn, who was so unlucky when running for Mossrs. Clark and Robinson last season, lias been entered by his now owner Captain Money for several events, and I notice that Dalkeith, Nightfall, and Great Scot arc frequently engaged. Noctuiform, too, who was such a failure last year, will be given the chanco of proving himself the great! horse which lie was said to be, as he has been entered in tlie City and Suburban Jubilee Handicap, Newbury Cup, and Manchester Cup. Noctuiform is also in the Ascot Gold Cup, and this event lias a wonderfully good entry of no fewer than fifty, a number which includes five sealed nominations. There are no fewer than nine French entries for the race, but the most notable is Maintenoii, winner of last year’s French Derby. The Russian Derby winner, Hammurabi, is also engaged, and the entry of Spearmint seems to prove that the report that Carbine’s great son would not stand training is incorrect. Other well-known Engiish horses engaged are Keystone 11., Velocity, Polymelus, Llangibby, Bcppo, Troutbeck, and Black Arrow, whilst amongst the three-year-olds I notice the name of Mr. W. Clark’s Meadow Rue, who was actually bought by her present owner out of a selling race last autumn for 500 guineas. She certainly showed wonderfully good form during the final month'of last season. Of the younger division, however, the best is Polar Star, and it is curious that last year’s crack two-year-old should have been entered, ns his owner stated that he did not intend to run him in the Ascot Cup until he was four years old.
