EDISON’S BIG AMERICAN PIC. TURE SHOW.

Tho Otago Times -states: —“Right at the start the audience were taken on a wonderful cinematograph trip around New York. The towering skyscrapers were passed under rapid review, and a ride along Brooklyn Bridge gave a splendid idea of that magnificent feat of engineering skill. Slum life was exhibited in the City Ghetto fish market, while wealth and aristocracy were paraded along ITitcli Avenue on Easter Monday. Another realistic contrast was New fork ‘in a fire and a blizzard. In the fire massive waves of gray smoko curled over the gigantic buildings in a weird and wonderful fashion, while tlie blizzard—well, Americans never do things by halves, and the blizzard was fearfully eokl to look at oven through the biograph. Some scenes from the life of an American policeman worked the audience up to a high pitch of excitement, while the escape of three convicts from Sing Sing prison was a sensational film, thoroughly up-to-date—tho fugitives escaped and fought a running fightin a motor car. The frolics of some school girls at Coney Island showed the varied entertainments provided at that charming resort of the plea-sure-seeker, while other amusing scones illustrated the spirit of America at play. The usual miscellaneous assortment of humorous films and illusions went to make up a thoroughly entertaining programme, the concluding slide, ‘The dream of the rarebit fiend,’ being of an exceptionally funny nature, and at the same time affording a fine panorama view of New York by moonlight. The pictures are of large dimensions, occupying the full width of the proscenium. Miss Bessie Sutton appears here for the first time. Coming as she does witli a big reputation, this little artist should prove a big draw to tho management. This little lady is only eight years old, and she does her turn in a way that sister artists three times lier age would envy. A complete change of programme wiii be given each evening.

PERILS OF THE DEEP. THE MARINER’S PRAYER. PERTH, Fob. 27. Captain Jones’ diary was preserved by him during the long boat voyage. It shows that tho sailmakor, Alexander Naylor, died on February ISth, and John Owen, an apprentice, two days later. The bodies were committed to tho deep, all repeating the Lord’s Prayer.

The last entry is dated February 21st, and reads as follows: "A light westerly breeze. Our water is all finished. O Lord pity us, otherwise we shall all be dead soon. Givo us strength to say ‘Thy will bo done.’ Is this hypocrisy ? I hope not. O Lord, give us strength, for ours is nearly all done. We look to Thee entirely. Our reckoning is all faulty. There is no sign of land yet-. Lord, guido us in this world and to the next.” Captain Evan Jones is a wiry little Welshman, and is very proud of tho behaviour of the crew throughout thoir trying experience, He could not explain the cause of the fire. All he heard was a muffled report like a distant gunshot, and then smoke issued from the hatchway. Tho flames seemed to envelope the whole ship. The captain thinks tho fire might have been caused by spontaneous combustion or an infernal machine in the hold. Most of the crew are in a low state, and unable to sleep.
