Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, yesterday. Mr R. G. Whitter has been appointed inspector of Taranaki education district. AUCKLAND, yesterday. Tbe Minister for Lands was interviewed by representatives of the Hokianga Canning Co., who asked the Government to supply land on the Taheke river for eight hundred families from England, who would utilise it . for growing fruit, especially peaches, splendid specimens of which were produced. Mr McNab said ho would see what could be done to set aside a portion of the AVaimana block when it was opened. A modification of the Special Settlement Act was highly desirable to encourage such settlement as was proposed. WELLINGTON, yesterday.

The largest estate certified to during the past month was Walter Guthrie, Otago, £25,594. The Hon. T. K. Macdonald was reelected chairman of the Wellington Harbor Board. • A deputation representing tbe coal dealers of the colony waited on the Acting-Premier this morning with certain complaints about the State coal depots. It was represented that the State coal depots were being conducted at a loss, and that they were entering into unfair _ competition with the merchants. Mr Hall-Jones denied that the State depots were running at a loss, but said be was not familiar with the details. He promised to bring tlie representations under the notice of tlie Minister of Mines, _ WESTPORT, yesterday. The Minister of Mines visited and inspected the Soddonville State mine yesterday, and in answer to a deputation said it was his intention to have further prospecting work carried out in the hope of discovering more coal of a marketable quality, some of the indications being promising. The Minister inspected the briquette works, which .are nearing completion, and met various deputations in connection with matters of local interest. He left by the Arahura in the evening for Collingwood, via Nelson.

Interviewed to-night regarding the statement made by Mr. Sproiil, New Zealand manager of the Oceanic Steamship Coy., and telegraphed from Auckland last evening, tho Acting Postmaster-General, Mr. Findlay, sfiicl : —“We have given' notice to Spreckles and Coy., and we are now awaiting thoir reply. I have no doubt Mr, Sproule is in turn awaiting a: answer from his principles in Sar Francisco, but whatever tlio nature of that reply the' Government intends to adhere to the attitude it has taken with regard to this matter, that unless tho Companies can satisfy us tho vessels are able to keep up to time-table date, we will not ship mails by that route.”

NATIVE LANDS. NAPIER, last night. The Native Lands Commission was occupied today with the hearing of fnrthor evidence with regard to the Wairarama, AVaipuka, and Okaihau, but except that evidence was tendered giving a higher valuation or the Wairarama block than had been given by the witnesses examined yesterday, there was practically nothing new elicited. HOADLEY AND SON. NAPIER, last night. The old-established firm of C. B. Hoadley and Son, land and estate agents here, was yesterday converted into a private company, the shares offered being considerably over-sub-scribed. The members of the new company consist of some of the most influential and wealthy settlers of Hawke's Bay. G. B. Hoadley and H. V. Hoadley have become managing directors, DR. BELL AND GLACIERS. TIMARU, last night. Dr. Bell, Director of Geological Survey, returned to Christchurch today after a month’s exploration of the glaciers about the head of the Twain River. He describes Douglas Glacior, on the west side of Mt. Softon, as marvellous for an ice fall, a sheer 2000 feot of ice falling continually, with reports of concussions like Jicavy c'annonading.

A DIVORCE CASE. WELLINGTON, last night. After a retirement of about an hour and a half the jury in tho clivorco suit William Pncey v. Thomasina Pncey and E. W. Dorset, found that respondent had committed adultery with Dorset prior to her departure from Levin, but that Pncey condoned this. They further found that, there lmd been subsequent acts of adultery between respondent and co-respondent', and that throe separate allegations of adultery made against petitioner wore false. They therefore found for petitioner, and awarded him £IOO damages against co-respondent. His Honor tlieu granted a decree nisi to be made absolute in throe months. His Honor iu giving judgment on an application to make co-respondent liable for tho wife’s costs, said he thought the husband should pay those ill accordance with the usual practice. Ho had brought an extortionate claim for £IOO. so it could not ho said there wore special circumstances to justify a departure from tho general course followed. His Honor ruled that petitioner pay £4O as respondent’s costs, and that co-respondent, pav £IOO damages and £45 costs of petitioner, and also repay to petitioner tho £4O expenses allowed to respondent. Co-respondent also lias to pay disbursements, costs of court, witnesses, etc. BOY DROWNED. AUCKLAND, last niglit. A boy named Victor Stewart, aged 12, was drowned while bathing in Obinemuri River at Annoroa this afternoon. SUPREME COURT. AUCKLAND, last night-. At tlio Supreme Court Criminal Sessions to-day a Maori named Te Rangi Atwtata, for breaking and entering at Wliakatano, was sentenced to 3 years’ imprisonment. Hira to Aku, also a native, charged with having committed perjury in connection with a horse stealing case, hoard last November, was found not guilty. HORSE RACING, Press Association.
