There is another beautiful lake ill tho lioiglibourliod of AVaikaromouna, called tho Little AVaikaro. It is easily visitod, as a forest-sliaded roadway connects the two lakes. AVaikaro is a lake of islands, no less than six being encircled by its calm waters There is forest on all those to the water’s edge, and the smaller lake, like the “Star,” is surrounded by nativo hush. The little hays possess white shelly or sandy beaches. Ono seems to bo in some fairyland of sweot romance, where whisperings are heard in the rustle of tho forest loavos and tlie ripple and murmur of many waters. There is more than whispering to bo heard, however, as it is tho true homo and haunt of the echo, which can bo noticed distinctly whonever the voice is raised in shout or song or merry laugh. Raising the echoes is one of tho amusements of picnickers, and gay excursionists. It is needless to say that there are countless charming spot's in which to camp. The difficulty only is to choose where all appears so lovely, and whore water, food, and fishing and safe sandy beaches are everywhere tempting tlio traveller to pitch tent. —E. M. Dunlop, on the “Sea of Rippling AA’atPrs,” in N.Z. Herald.
The cricket match was drawing to a close, and tho flukey player, who usually gave several chances, had just gone in to bat. The fioldmen drew in painfully close, for they meant, if possible, to catch him napping. The game was in a very critical stage. Two splendid chances of being caught out had gone a-begging, •mil tho fieldsmen drew in even closer. And then, in the midst of the intense silence, a small voice piped out—
“Look out, Bob! Mind ver don’t get yer pockets picked!”
