Mrs. S. Dolemau ,au old resident of Gisborne, passed away on Saturday morning. The cause of death was heart disease. The deceased lady was 4-1 years old, and had lived in tlie district for over oO years. She leaves a family of 12 children to mourn tlieir loss.
A Press Association telegram from. Invorcargill states that Mr. George W. Nicliffl, a prominent citizen, died suddenly on Saturday afternoon. Mr. Nichol lived at Ocean Beach, and came up to tojvn daily for business. On Saturday morning he came up as usual, transacted business throughout the day, and left for Ocean jjcacli by the 5.10 train. He was apparently in good health. On alighting at Ocean Beach lie appeared overcome by faintness, and was carried into the cooking house attached to the Freezing Works, where lie expired in a few minutes. The deceased was a member of the firm of Nichol Bros., Bluff and Invorcargill, shipping and general merchants, and at one time was a shipowner. Among tlieir vessels was the Chance, immortalised by Frank T. Bullen in “Tlie Cruise of the Cachalot.” Mr. Nichol was eloselv associate!} with the development of Bluff and Invercargill, and
was an active public man, being identified in most movements having for tlieir objects tlie advancement of the district. He was a life-long mebmer of tlie Chamber of Commerce. At one time lie whs chairman of directors of the Southland Frozen Meat Company. His unexpected death caused a severe shock to bis many business and private friends, and great sympathy is felt for his widow and grown-up family. A Press Association telegram states that the Rev. R. Inglis, of Slioalliaven (N.S.W.), has accepted a call to the ministry of the Onslow (Wellington) Presbyterian Church.
Mr. W. Maddison left by steamer yesterday for Christchurch on business in connection with his ear-mark-ing scheme, and expects to lie absvnt for about 10 days. Mr. Francis E. Scverne, governor of Auckland Gaol, died somewhat suddenly at midiiigliU'on Friday last, aged 66. He enjoyed robust health until Thursday morning, when he had a heart seizure, but was expected to recover in a few days.
On Saturday the " Dunedin prison officials presented Mr. Arnold with a silver-mounted dressing-case in recognition of bis efforts to have the hours of warders reduced, the number off duty on Saturdays and Sundays increased, and the obtaining of additional bouse allowance. It was stated the prison officers throughout New Zealand recognised in Mr. Arnold tlie best friend they ever bad in Parliament.
Captain Gumming, who has been to 1 imam mid South on an unsueceßtul search for a suitable oil launch came ashore from Miowera on Saturday morning. He proceeded by the same steamer to Auckland to arrange for the building of a launch, and is expected to return by Wednesday afternoon’s boat. During bis absence Captain Hawke acts as harbormaster. Mr. Levy, of tlie Petono Railway Workshops, i sat present in Gisborne in connection with the local railway ca rriago arrangements.
