AN OPPOSITION VICTORY.

Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, last night. Following are the filial returns for the election for the Taranaki seat:—

11. J. H. Okey (Opp.) ... 1991 E. Dockerill (Govt.) 1627 W. G. Malone (Ind. Lib.) ... 1010 There were 23 informal votes. The number of names on tlio roll was 0205.

All the candidates addressed the multitude, as also did the Hon. Jas. Carroll and Mr. Massey. The latter was denied a hearing until after Mr, Carroll had spoken. Mr. Carroll, in his remarks, congratulated the winning candidate, whose success he attributed to superior organisation and the unfortunate split in the Liberal vote. Ho claimed a largo Government majority, and they would win in a straight-out go at a general election. Mr. Massey accepted the challenge if the issue was made Freehold versus Leasehold.
