NEW TESTAMENT FIND
MANUSCRIPTS DISCOVERED IN ASIA DECIPHERED.
Professor Friedriclc Mueller, the eminent philologist, has succeeded in deciphering somo of the manuscripts taken to Berlin from Chinese Turkestan by Dr. Lecoq.
For sonic time it was believed that these fragments wore in a language every trace of which bad been lost. This is not quite correct. They are in the language of Sogdiana, a province of the ancient Persian Empire, and afterwards a province of the Greek Kingdom of Bactria, situated between the Oxus and Jaxartes. Tlieir main interest lies in the fact that they are fragments of Books of tlio New Testament, and that their copiers had access to versions which are now totally unknown, and they differ considerably from all authoritative ancient versions recognised by the Greek and Catholic Churches. Dr. Lecoq found these fragments near Turfan, buried in tlie sand.
