At-the Slate river.sluicing claim this morning a falling rock smothered Llewellyn James, aged 24, second son of Frank James, of Puramalioi, 'whose other . son was killed in the Boer war. Efforts to extricate him were made, his dead body being ■found. There are no further details.

SLOW DEATH BY DROWNING

NELSON, yesterday.

In connection. with tho fatality at tlio Slate river claim at-Collingwood to Llewellyn James, later details show that he was practically drownjed. He was working in a tail race put out of rock'with sides of varying height. 'The race had been used for thirty years'. One of the sides slipped in immediately below James, and a small portion of debris pinned him ;to tho other side. Two nozzles of l water wore in full play at the time. The water was dammed back and the I race soon filled to a height of several feet, covering James where ho lay. When the body was found only a few stones were covering it. There were no marks of violence. Deceased was v accorded a Foresters’ funeral. The inquest is proceeding. The extreme cold and heavy frosts is held to be the cause of the. race- breaking.
