With recent years there lias come into the mercantile marine a new kind of cargo vessel known as the turret steamer. The type made its first appearance in 1392, but at first the demand was very.small, the output for the first' two years being cnly two steamers. The advantages which these vessels conferred in carrying certain kinds of cargo became speedily apparent, however—so much so that, in. 1906, the annual ovtput from the yards of Messrs. AVm. Doxford and Sons, Limited, Sunderland (who are sole builders), had risen to no less than 106,000 tons. AVo nrderstand (says tlio Dunedin Star) that the Union Co. have now placed an order with Doxford and Sons for •a turret steamer of 1000 tons deadweight, her principal dimensions being 316 ft by 42ft. She is' to be delivered at the end of November, and may, therefore, be looked for in colonial waters in the early part of 1908. The feature of these steamers is that they carry a large open turret, running horizontally .along, the outside of the hull, aji arrangement tyhich oennits of the ready stowage of Bueli classes of cargo as timber or grain. The type is largely represented in the Clan Line ; and also in the fleet of the Canadian Ocean and Inland Navigation Company, ,
