HIS MAJESTY'S THEATRE
BLACK-PREMTS.LAY CONCERTS. It is only on very rare occasions that music-lovers here' have an opportunity of hearing a quartette of such high-class artists as those composing the Black-Premyslav Company, and we confidently expect this combination will be greeted by a crammed house on Monday next. The Christchurch Press says:—As an exponent of oratorio Mr. Black stands pre-eminent in England, and no better evidence of his powers could be wished for than liis splgndid singing of “O. Ruddier than the Cherry.” The dramatic recitative was finely declaimed, and in the aria Mr. Blade sang most artistically. In response to an enthusiastic encore Mr. Black, with great success, sang “I AVas a Palo Young Curate,” from “The Sorcerer.” Miss ltosina Buckmann was heard to great advantage in “Elizabeth’s Prayer,” from Tannhauser,” the dramatic character of the number suiting her excellently. M. Promyslav is a violinist of rare ability, combining as he does, great, tenderness of tone with wonderful brilliancy of execution and great breadth and fire of expression. In this latter he resembles very much the younger Heerman. He infuses into compositions requiring it the greatest possible intensity, whilst preserving a beautiful purity of tone. In both the intense and the brilliant styles M. Premyslav is equally successful. This was magnificently illustrated by his splendidly artistic playing of Schubert’s “Ave Maria.”
