The village handyman at Itowayton, Conn., who was employed to do the post office up, used maple sugar instead of varnish. The mistake was discovered when the postmaster’s wife could, not make the breakfast cakes because the sugar had vanished. Only four councillors voted, soven remaining neutral as a protest against the extravagance.
