LOCAL UNIONS CANCELLED.
REASON UNKNOWN. Press Association. WELLINGTON, yesterday. Tho cancellation of the Gisborne Wharf Laborers, Lightermen, and Stevedores’ Union and Gisborne Painters’ and Decorators’ Industrial Union is gazetted. Mr. G. E. Darton, who is secretary of both unions, informed a Times reporter that tho message is incomprehensible to him. There are no circumstances that would lead to such a cancellation, and ho inclines to the belief that a mistake has been made by the Court. He says that every year a number of unions drop out of existence, and are gazetted accordingly, blit the local unions named are in active; working order. The Wharf Laborers’ Union (which is affiliated and communicates with the Waterside Workers’ Union) held its usual monthly riieeting on Thursday evening, and is very much f ’alive,” > as a reference jfco the working conditions required will testify. As to the Painters’ and Decorators’ Union, it had several cases inquired into at the last sitting of the Arbitration Court. It is as a body affiliated with the 'Federated Union of Painters. Mr. -Darton is in communication with headquarters to have the matter set right.
