The New Zealand-Times states that when Dr Bell, Government Geologist, was engaged in meteorological investigation in the Southern Alps, lie discovered and camped within sight of a marvellous ice-fall on the Douglas glacier, on the western face of Mount Sefton. At one point the great glacier found, or had worn, a valley which ended abruptly i n a precipice 4000 ft high, over which enormous masses of ice fall regularly every two minutes, night and day, the ice being forced over the edge by the steady pressure of the glacier behind. Dr. Bell and his narty, camping two miles away, could not make each other heard continuously on account of the deafening noise. The

sight of the toppling ice-field was as exhilarating as it was deafening. The j great Douglas ico-fall will count in 1 the future among tho wonders of j the Southern Alps. An excellent pa- j noramic view of the Alps, taking in ! many miles of Alpine territory, and showing Mount Sefton in the cold distance —indicating the point in the great wall of rock over which the icefield topples with such regularity, and the moraine near tho camp^—was •secured hy Dr. Bell. This, with a fine collection of views, will illustrate the series ofilfictures he intends _ to give on New Zealand in the United States and Canatfci during liis_ approaching visit to\ America. From a tourist point of uiew a fascinating sight is added to tile colony s list.
