PAINTERS’ UNION.
Tho full text of the judgment in the Arbitration case between the Gisborne Painters’ Union and E. Hall has been published in the current number of the Labor Journal, as follows:—“The view we take of the matter is this: If a painter employs a manager, such servant, when performing the duties of a manager, is not subject to the provisions of the award. If, however, lie is employed to do the work of any of the workers mentioned in clause 2 of the award — journeymen painters, onnerhangers, glaziers, grainers and decorators — then lie becomes subject to the award so long as he is doing such work, and
if he works overtime at such work he must be paid for it in accordance with the award. In the present case it is not suggested that Joliffe, when
workincr before 7.45 a.m. on the three dates in question, was doing any work other than that of a manager. The therefore has failed to prove any breach of the award, and the applications are dismissed, with costs (£2 2s) in the first case.”—W. A. Sim, Judge, Bth April. Mr. Darton states that this was what the .Union was striving to establish. What thev wanted was, that if foremen worked at ordinary work the- should be paid in accordance with the award: .
At a meeting of the Union held on Monday evening, tho secretar- was instructed to inquire if it was necessary to re-register the Union, and if so, to do it. Other formal business was transacted.
