The Huddart. Parker and Co.'s s.s. Victoria arrives from Southern ports on Saturday morning and proceeds to Auckland and Sydney. The Union Co.’s s.s. Tarawera will not arrive from Auckland until late on Sunday night, as she will be detained in Auckland, the launch will leave the whart at 0 o clock on Monday morning. The Union Co.’s s.s. Wnnaka arrives to-dav Irom South. Thi> trawler Beatrice, which lias been on the slip undergoing an annual inspeeiou. was launched again on Wednesday. She will commence work immediately. The scow Surprise sailed yesterday afternoon for Tairua. The barque Constance Craig was shifted to the Knit.i side of the river to load ballast. The steamers Kildare and Indra left YalaparaLo, on the south coast of America, within an hour ot one another, and their arrival at Auckland was separated by only seven hours. The two steamers left the American port on June -I. the ludra having a start of about an hour. The next day sin* was overhauled by the Kildare, and subsequently the vessels passed and re-passed one another. Like many of tin* old-time sailing ships which used to trade in China waters, the barque Woolbara. at proscut in Wellington, is equipped with an armoury containing six old muzzleloading muskets and bayonets and half a dqzen cutlasses, with which to welcome pirates. We understand (says the Dunedin Star) that a new steam service affecting Dunedin will shortly he opened by a Wellington firm, the Maoriland Steamship Company. Some time ago Captain McArthur, one of the directors of the company, was in Dunedin, and it was then rumored that part of his business here was to confer with local men with a. view to selecting a. suitable agent. N T o confirmation of this rumor could he obtained then but it now turns out that the Dunedim agency has been conferred on Mr. Keith Ramsay, whose long experience of the Dunedin coastal trade is well-known. For the projected trade the Maoriland Company have two vessels available, the Ennerdale and Torgauten. The Ennerdale. the company’s last purchase, is a new steamer, which lias not vet appeared in New Zealand. She left Flinders Bay, West Australia, on the 6th inst., ant] is due in Wellington on the 21st. After discharge at that port and Lyttelton, she will begin running in the new trade for which she has been acquired. She is an up-to-date vessel, having been built in 1902, and is capable of carrying 1650 tons on a moderate draught of 16ft 3in. Her principal dimensions are 230 ft by 33ft, by 16ft lin. The Torgauten, which originally belorfged to the West Coast Shipping Company. is an auxiliary screw steamer, built in 1901. and carries about 300
tons (measurement) on a draught of 9ft 6in. She is at present engaged in carrying timber from Oneluinga to Wellington, hut if the enterprise turns out' as the promoters expect she will probablv run in the timber trade between Waikawa and Timaru and Lyttelton.
