THE WAIHIRERE INCIDENT.

At last Council meeting a committee was appointed to fix the responsibility for the AVaihirero title bungle on the right shoulders. It will be remembered that the proclamation did not tally with the land held by the Council, and the area was relinquished under leo-al advice.

Cr. Mann, reporting on behalf of tho committee last night, said inquiries had been made. It was elicited that the Survey Office was solely responsible. That was the only explanation vouchsafed them. The Mayor: ' The responsibility rests there.

Cr. Maun: Y T es. It rests there, without any reined”. They seemed to ring us off very sharply when we asked details. (Laughter.) Cr. Sheridan: This does not clear us of the absurdity .of spending money before we had a proper title. Cr. Bright: The money is not wasted. AVe can do something with the property later on, if the stone is there.

The Mayor concurred. He pointed out that any portion could be resumed later on bv proclamation if the Council wished. It was just as well to wait and get clear of the complications that had arisen.
