A FAULTY ROADWAY.
LEADS TO CLAIM FOR DAMAGES. At last night’s Council meeting Mr. Henry Currie submitted tho following claim: —“To damage sustained on Rutene road, £10.” He explained in his letter: “Ou the evening of July otli I had an accident in crossing a drain cut across the road in Rutene road, for tho water-pipe. Tho concussion in crossing was so great as to throw me out of my gig and cause the horse to bolt with the vehicle and smash it to pieces. I also received injuries, both knees being badly bruised and skinned, and the muscles of my left strained, causing me much pain even now. If it pleaso you I would like the matter settled as amicably as possible, and am making a very light claim.” The claimant also mentioned that quite a number of people had barely escaped serious accidents at this spot, amongst them being Messrs. Winter and Wyllie and Colonel Porter. A lad named Liddie had also been thrown from his horse through tho faulty roadway. The Mayor said that he and Mr. Clirisp had inspected the spot. The road was dry, and in turning tho driver must have missed the culvert and struck the kerb. Tho Town Clerk said tho cart was not turning, but going straight across the road. Cr. Miller moved that the letter be referred to the contractors. He took it they were the responsible parties, and were covered by an accident policy
The Mayor concurred with this course, and tlie motion was carried without further discussion.
