Though tho complete trado statistics for tho half-vear have not yet boon completed, Mr. J. Witty, secretary of tho Harbor Board, is able to state that the figures show an allround incroase. The number and tonnage of vessels onded and cleared for tho six months ended June 30th is:—lnwards: Steamers 244, ton-

na'ge,322,577, number of crew 10,672. aa ilinjr vessels 01, tonnage 6715. Outwards : Steamers 213, tonnage 322,444, crew 10,656; sailing vessels 62, tonnage 6666.

Mr. W. E. Crawford lias presented to tho Harbor Hoard a very fine enlarged photograph, showing tho upper part of tho river harbor at a bus- period. Tho view takes in the Kaiti bridge and the expanse of water extending to tho shed, whilst the scene gives a verv good impression of tho number of sailing vessels which lie at tho wharfs at ono time. A glimpse of the small dredge in the foreground hints that the Harbor Hoard is alive to tho necessity of providin • a good depth of wator for the craft. The photo, which has been handsomely framed by Mr. "Whinray, is one of the best in the Board’s possession, and, liung yesterday in an advantageous position, it is an appropriate adofnmont to the large Board room.

The settlers of tlio Whatatutu and I’ulia districts have presented a petition to the statioumaster (Mr. H. Day), requesting that a man be stationed at Puha for receiving goods and parcels. It is urged that as Puha is the present terminus of the line a large quantity of goods and parcels are carried there, and that in consequence of tho bad roads and of there being no accommodation at' Pulia for those having goods coming or going, it is impossible to be at the station when the train arrives or departs. Puha settler's cannot very well use the ICaraka station for goods owin to the bad state of the Cliff road. Tho petitioners also ask that the Puha station be connected by telephone for the convenience of those lining tho line for transit. In reply to Mr. B. Taylor, who presented the petition, the statioumaster has promised to represent tho matter to the Department. Mr. W. D. Lysuar, who has been for a trip to the Empire City, returned yesterday morning. Whilst in Wellington he interested himself in tho question of tho Harbor Bill, and interviewed a number of tho members of Parliament, including, on the suggestion of Mr. Carroll, Mr. A. T. Ngata, who had previously announced his intention of opposing the measure. Mr. Ngata made a strong point of the unfairness of expecting the Waiapu County Council to bo responsible for Native rates, owing to tlio great difficulty in the collection. The matter was threshed out at length, Mr. Ngata eventually recognising that as the natives and their land must benefit lv the harbor, it was reascJkigftle to include native lands in the rating area. His antagonism was withdrawn upon Mr. Lvsnar undertaking to ask the Board to pass a resolution advocating that tlio committoe of the House eliminate the clause which would make the Waiapu Countv Council liable for native rates. Mr. Nrratn also made it a condition that the Waiapu County should not have new harbor rates until threo years after the passing of the Bill, which would allow native titles to be placed on a better footing. As to the Tolaga Riding. Mr. Ngata could see no good reason for its exclusion. Mr. Lvsnar states that the opinion generally was favorable to tho Bill, and considers that with the amendment mentioned there should be no difficulty in passing it.
