LOCAL LABOR MARKET.
I Following is the report of Mr. i Georgeson, representative of the LaI bor Department, on the local labour market up to July 20th:—Building I Trades: These are very busy; several I contracts arranged last month are now r in; a fairly progressive condition, I but still dependent on the buildng materal obtainable shortage oi bricks greatly hampering operations. I there is_ still a demand for' carpenters, painters and plumbers,' while latex; bricklayers will also be required. Good tradesmen in all of the lines I £ “f!l' e,l ieiition o d will experience no difficulty in obtaining openings for j somo time. Engineering and Black- I smithing: All in this lino fully employed, but little demand for additional workers. Clothing trade (factories) : Tailoring reported somewhat quiet. Dressmaking, also the quiet season ; not a great amount of over- I umo worked. Retail trade (grocers): Fair amount of business doing I Clothing: Somewhat quiet, but live-I her than last mouth. Boots: Very I lair biisinesss_ reported. Coaclibuild- I ing: \\ on, in this trade reported I busy; all workmen engaged full time | Cycle engineering: Tho factories re I port. fair amount of work, especially I repairing department. Unskilled la- I bor : The amount of work offering I during the month for unskilled worker® lias been comparatively small. I Jhe chief demand was for good ex- I perienced bushfellors, and in this re- I spect the supply has not been suffi- I cient; several sections of bush (placed I with tins department- to obtain men I for felling) have not been completed I nishmen being unobtainable. The I local freezing works (two) have practically closed down for the season, l and also the waterworks contracts are I nearing completion. I
