DEBATING SOCIETY.
There was a good muster at the usual meeting of the Gisborne Debating Society last evening, a.t the Church of England Schoolroom when Archdeacon Will in ms gave an address on “Tlio Weather,” with special reference to local conditions. The speaker, who handled his subject in a masterly manner, first dealt with the rainfall, and by tho aid of a blackboard and of various charts, which h- bail prepared, soon had the audience thoroughly interested. He explained that two-thirds of the rain that falls at Gisborne, comes from the East. He gave a very clear account of the constitution of a cyclone and initiated bis hearers into the vagaries of this powerful force. Briefly touchin)!; on tho temperature, he congratulated the residents of Gisborne on their fine climate anil stated that on the whole the temperature was very even. With regard to deforestation the speaker said that he did not think it had a great effect on the rainfall of a- district, as for the last 33 years there had been no serious difference in the rainfall of this district and a great deal of hush had been felled. Archdeacon Williams explained at some length, how the amount of sunshine was ascertained, and distributed charts among the audience completely explaining the matter. At the close of the address the members were invited to view the charts and to ask questions, the invitation being full} - availed of by all present.
