At a meeting of the Turanganm Library Trustees on Monday there were present: Messrs. L. T Sy-mes (chairman), F. T. Morgan, R. U. Burke, W. J. Hawley (lion. sec.). A. Cuthbert, and A. L. Muir. Lead pipes were the subject-of some discussion at the Council last evening. Cr. Sheridan said thoy were far superior, and instances had been known where tliov lasted hundreds of years. Cr. Sawyer: Yes, many a person lias been poisoned, with them, too. Cr. AVillianis, appealed to for professional opinion, said that it depended on the water. Where the water contained any acidity, or emanated from peaty sources,' thore was danger, but not in tho present'case. The Mayor : Mr. Bay tells me that lead pipes get a coating like enamel; that is why they last eo long. Professional advice had been in favor of lead pipes. Cr. Sawyer’s fear that lead pipes would become flattened by traffic over their resting-place was not joined in liv his fellow-imembers.
The committee appointed to consider the 14 applications received for the position of Borough turncock reported, last evening that it had reduc' d the list to four, namely, Messrs. C. Allen (Dunedin), G. Paul (Dubbo, N.S.W.), R. Beveridge (Newmarket, Auckland), and J. Augliton (Dunedin). These names were referred to the Borough Engineer for his report. Mr. J. Hay, the present inspector on the reticulation contract, had also put in an application at £5 per week, hut the wage being £3 10s tli.e committee did not deal with it. The Borough Engineer reported that in his opinion the olio-ice lav between Messrs. Allan and Beveridge, and he recommended the latter, age 30, who is turncock at Newmarket, lias had experience in-tapping under pressure as required, and holds good credentials.
Some merriment was caused at the Borough Council last evening by Ot. Miller's remarks, made with mv-k seriousness, regarding the group photograph of the Council recently published in the Christchurch Press. The speaker denounced the Mayor as being responsible for the “caricature ” In his opinion it should come under the by-law prohibiting publications of ail offensive character. (Laughter.) The speaker further likened it o Cruiksliank’s drawing of a Dingly Dell group in “Pickwick.” Cr. Mann confided that lie was just recoving from tho shock which the photograph censed to his nervous system. Ur.
Williams: My name is put under it. 1 think I will consult my solicitor about any action for damages. (Laughter.) The Mayor agreed +hat it was a dreadful photo, there was :io doubt about it, but lie sought to prove that the wintry weather was to some extent responsible for the unique production, which had paralysed Gisborne. “Cr. Whinray was talking about rusticity to-night,” observed Cr. Miller, “through that picture we will he designated as rusticity personified.”
