PERSONAL.

The Hon. J. Carroll will arrive on a visit to Gisborne this morning, returning to-morrow evening. Visitors to town include: Messrs. Blair and Francis (Motu), W. F. Sinclair (Tolaga Bay), R. D. Dymock, J. A. Marshall, Richardson, A. Jackman, (Waimata), P. 11. Sherratt (Patutahi), A. A. Kennedy, J. M. Richardson (Napier), E. V. Palmer, L. 13. Tullock (Whatatutu). Mr. W. D. S. McDonald is at present in town having come in to attend a meeting of the Cook County Council.

SCHOOL COMMITTEE. I A mooting of the Gisborne School Committee was held last evening, there being present Messrs. Somervell (c liaii man), Sawyer, Wildish, j>arton, Spence, File (secretary), and Revs. Gridin and Grant. A letter was received from Mr. Maynard to the effect that the branches of some trees growing in the school grounds were overhanging his property and were damaging his stable. —Tho chairman stated that Mr. Stuckey had cut some of the limbs away, but apparently the work done lmd not been sufficient. —It was resolved'to remove the offending branches. Mr. D. Cowan wa6 appointed to the vacant position caused by the resignation of Mr. J. S. Waucliop, and Mr. Olsen to the vacancy caused by Mr. Cowan’s promotion. As this would still leave a vacancy it was decided to recommend tho Board to advertise for a male teacher. Miss Jessie Brown was appointed assistant teacher in the Gisborne school. The following report was submitted by the head master (Mr. F. J. Rowley), and adopted by the meeting:—“l beg to lay before your committee my monthly report. The attendance during the past month lias suffered considerably through the wet weather and tho prevalence of sickness. It has averaged 71.05, or 83 per cent, of the roll number, which is now 858. Tho staff is still working short-handed. Miss Brown is to take up her duties at the beginning of next month. Mr. Warburton, who was sent to relievo the pressure on tho staff, .lias been removed by tho Board, and in consequence we are two assistant teachers short. A team of boys are at pro-1 sent in Napier, having gone down to play tho annual match with the papier High School. Mr. Cowan has gone in charge.” In reply to an application for two clocks and a new bell for tho school, a letter was received from tho Board granting £5 for the bell and agreeing to give a subsidy for the two clocks. It was resolved to refer the matter of tho bell to tho visiting committee to arrange. Accounts were passed for payment to the amount of £25, leaving a balance of £9 to tho credit of the comMr. Rowley, on behalf of tlic Bath Committee, stated that they had caused some trees in the school ground • to be felled and uprooted, to make room for the swimming baths. Jhe trees had been cut into 2ft lengths, and when sold would about cover expenses. The visiting committee ror tlie ensuing month will consist of Messrs. Blair, Bright, and Darton. A misunderstanding occurred among the members of the committee as to the hour the meeting was called for, and after some discussion the hour was fixed at 7.30 p.m. lie school stationery, Mr. Rowley said that he had been to all the stationers in Gisborne, and had received a price from e ac h, Mr. Bushnell’s tender of £29 18s 9d being the lowest.
