HAWKE’S BAY v. POVERTY BAY
Tho representative hockey match, Hawke’s Bay v. Poverty Bay, was played at Victoria Domain on Saturday afternoon last beforo a large number of spectators. The game was fast and interesting from start to finish, some very fine form being shown by both teams. The visitors won tlio spin of the coin and defended tlie western goal. From the bullyoff the home team attacked and from a fine passing rush Hooper sent tho ball into the net, but the whistle had sounded for off-side play. Gisborne continued to press their opponents and Hansen gave. Roderick a quick pass, tho latter shooting a neat goal. Tho Hawke's Bay forwards, headed by Velhani, raced the ball right into tho Gisborne circle where Armstrong with a splendid drive brought relief. Roderick, by a fine rush, transferred play to tlio visitors’ line where Bright narrowly missed the not with a fast drive. Some very fast play ensued, the ball travelling from one end of tlio ground to the other with lightning rapidity. Wolham, wing-for-ward for the Hawke’s Bay * team, gave a fine exhibition, taking tlio ball along at a. great rate and beating those who attempted to bar his progross with apparent ease. Armstrong and Roderick became associated in. a passing rush and soon had the visitors on tho defence, Bisson coming to the rescue in tho nick of time. Half-time was shortly afterwards -sounded. Upon resuming tho play was of a very even nature, both teams being bent on scoring. Tho visitors were playing well together and from a brilliant rush ill which Wolham, Dalgleish and Shirley were prominent, the latter succeeded in finding the net, despite tho local goalkeeper’s splendid effort to prevent a score. Two or three attempts on the part of the home team to score were frustrated by the fine defensive play of the visitors’ goal-keeper, his fine driving being a feature of the game. Welham gained possession and made tho run of the day carrying the ball tlie whole length of tho ground. Hawke’s Bay attacked hotly and Olsen saved well. Roderick, who was playing a fine forward game, transferred the play into the visitors’ territory where Gisborne were awarded a
corner hit and Armstrong, stopping cleverly, shot -a- splendid goal amidst great applause. The whistle sounded shortly afterwards, . Gisborne thus winning by 2 goals to 1. The game was controlled by Messrs. Pavitt (Gisborne) and Danvers (Napier) while Messrs. L. Maude and Mason held tlie line flags. At tlie Hotel Coronation on Saturday evening the visiting men’s hockey team was entertained at an enjoyable smoke concert. There was a good attendance, and a number of
toasts Were honored. A king programme of songs lin'd recitations was gone through. Air. G. K. Parley occupied tlio chair and Mr, L.mreason presided at the piano. The team left last evening for home by tho Taluiio. The Clive ladies’ hockey team play their return match with tho Gisborne, A team to-morrow afternoon, when they are expected to give the home team a harder task than in their previous match. Tho Auckland Indies’ representative team arrive oil AVodnesduy and play the Gisborne ladies on 'l'hursdny afternoon.
