MASTER MARINERS’ CERTIFI CATES.
Press Association. AUCKLAND, September 3. An inquiry into the foundering' of tlic cutter l l ’]orii in Auckland Harbor nil July 20tli, which resulted in the loss of the lijes of those on board'— Robert Sullivan. Thomas Clark, and St. Clair Patrick Phalf—was commenced to-day. Mr. Mays, for the Marine Department, said all the circumstances pointed to a sudden overwhelming of the vessel. The master had no certificate, hut it was understood that he was a callable man. A master, according to the Act, required to have a certificate. After lengthy evidence the Court found that the vessel lml foundered through carelessness in securing hatches, which allowed water to enter the hold; and that the owners were to blame in not ascertaining if the man in charge had a certificate if he was going outside harbor limits. It was. ordered that the owners pay the costs of, the inquiry.
