ANHYDROUS AMMONIA.
PROTECTION FOR MANUFACTURERS WANTED. (Special to Times.) AVELLINGTON, Sept. 17. Speaking on the third reading of tho Tariff Bill, Mr. Gray, the member for Christchurch North, put in a plea for assistance in the manufacture of anhydrous ammonia by the Christchurch Gas Co. As the item was not on tho Tariff ho said be could not deal with it. He hud, however, approached the Minister with a view to getting some protection for the industry. A company formed in Sydney was buying all the liquid ammonia from the gas-works at Wellington, Auckland, and Dunedin. This liquid ammonia was made into anhydrous ammonia, and sold there at Is 8d and Is 10 per lb., but with a view to crushing out the industry here it was sold at Is 3d per lb., and sent to New Zealand even on sale or return. It was, he added, used, by thq freezing companies. The Minister had replied that we could not make one-twentieth of what was used. He, Mr. Gray, found that what was imported into this colony in 1905 wrfs £5466 worth, of which £5083 came from New South Wales, but he was assured the Christchurch Company was prepared to turn out 50 per cent, more than this.
