Our Wellington correspondent telegraphed last night that Mr. Frank Dwyer, of the firm of Bannatyne and Co., and a son-in-law of the late Premier’s, is suffering from a somewhat severe attack of pneumonia. The Jewish residents of Gisborne on Wednesday suitably solemnised the Day of Atonement. A religious service was held at the residence of Mr. A. Zachariah, Kaiti, being conducted by Mr. Isaacs, of Auckland, who was assisted by Mr. Henry Lewis. When called to sit on an allegod perjury case at the Supremo Court yesterday, a juror named Georgo Shennan asked to bo excused from attendance on the score of deafness. His Honor said the application should •have been made before the juror had been sworn in. In excusing Mr. Shennan he advised him to have his name removed from the jurors’ list. The half-yearly general meeting of the Gisborne Waterside Workers’ Union was held last night at the secretary’s office. There was a very good attendance, Mr. J. Harding presiding. The annual statement of accounts showed that the Union had practically doubled its funds during the twelve months as compare'll with the previous year—a fact much appreciated by members. The election of officers resulted :—President, Mr. .1. Fitzmaurice; vice-president, Mr. W. Cass; secretary, Mr. Geo. Ansell; lion, treasurer, Mr. J. Alilin (re-elect-ed) ; executive, Messrs J. Harding, H, Lloyd. G. E. Darton, J. Farley, •L Slade, C. Matheson, J. Mclnnency, and W. Taylor; trustees, Messrs J. Harding and W. Taylor; auditors, Messrs G. E. Darton and J. Slade. Votes of thanks were accorded to officers. General regret was expressed at Mr. Darton’s decision to relinquish the secretaryship. - Members expressed their thanks for his excellent work on behalf of the Union, and i special resolution of appreciation was recorded on the minutes. Mention was made of tile departure of Mr. C. Freer, who bad been an enthusiastic member of the Union since its inception, and a vote of thanks for his past services was passed.
A mooting of tho Gisborno School Committee will bo hold this evening at 7.30 o'clock.
Tho Hon. Mr. Carroll is interesting himself in tho objection to tho beach site being used for gaol purposes. In reply to a communication from Cr. J. Whinray ho remarks:— “As I share your views in opposition to tho building boiiig erected on the Railway Reserve, I shall do all m my power to impress upon my colleagues tho wishes of the Council and citizons in this matter. ”
