FOOTBALL.

C. S. AND CO. v. COMBINED MERCHANTS. The annual match between, tho above teams took place at Victoria Domain yesterday afternoon. There was a largo attendance, and the weather was beautifully fine. Hansen captained Hie combined team, and Puilett aoted in a like capacity for Common, Shelton, and Co. Puflett won the toss, and played with a strong wind and sun behind him. From the kick-off play was of a fast, open character, and some fine passing was indulged in by both teams. The blues (C. S. and Co.) did not avail themselves of Hie splendid advantage tlio sun and wind offered, and instead of centring the ball they invariably found the line. Half way through the first spell Millor secured, and making a fine run punted over the blues’ full-back’s head, and Willock, who followed up smartly, gained possession, and scored a fine try between the goal-posts. Miller’s kick at goal was a failure. 3 —o. After some hard play in mid-field the whistle sounded half-time, and the sides changed over. Upon resuming itlie whites attacked with spirit, and Sutcliffe relieved with a good line kick. For off-side play on the part of a AVhite. i free kick was awarded to C. S. and Co., and Puflett placed a splendid goal, bringing the scores even. 3 —3. Marshall, the whites’ 'half, secured from a scrum on the blues’ line and seat a neat pass to Miller, who raced through Hie opposing backs and scored. Willock mas entrusted with the kick at goal, which proved fruitless. 6—3. Marshall repeated his performance by shooting the leather out to Campbell at the right moment, and tlie latter, after a strong feinting run. touched down behind the line. Taking the kick himself he succeeded in piloting the oval safely between the posts. 11—3. From a' scrum on the whites’ line “Pomp” Roderick secured, and evading bis opponents scored a clever try. Puflett failed with the kick at goal. 6 —ll. Burnett marked from a high kick, and Puflett added fresh laurels to his place-kicking record by landing a beautiful goal against a strong wind from near the half-way. 9 —ll. Some fast play ensued, and the combined team worked their way to the blues’ line, where the ball was foolishly kicked across .to the open, and Wyllie, who was waiting patiently for just such a chance, took the ball at top speed and raced round behind tho posts. Campbell made a good though ineffectual attempt at goal. 14 —9. Tho whistle sounded with Hie blues making strenuous efforts to equalise Hie scores. Mr. J. J. Martin controlled tlie rame in an efficient manner, while Messrs. Gr ini inton and Garrett were tho line umpires. BIG SCORE BY A BOY. Press Association. . MASTERTON, Sept. 19.
