PRICE OF FLOUR ADVANCED. A RISE OF TEN SHILLINGS. Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH. Sept. 20. The New r Zealand Flour Millers Association announces an advance'in the price of flour of 10s per ton as from to-day: The present prices are: Sacks £lO 10s, bags £ll, 501 b bags £ll ss, 251 b bags £ll 10s. The reason for the advance is that with wheat selling at current quotations it is impossible to manufacture flour at the old prices. The millers assert that the prices ruling lately have been from 20s to 30s per ton below what would yield them a fair margin of profit, and that they w’ere enabled to carry on only because they had secured supplies of wheat when prices were considerably below present rates.
RISE HELD TO BE INSUFFICIENT BAKERS LIABLE TO PUT BREAD UP. DUNEDIN, Sept. 20. Tho advance of 10s per ton in the irico of flour is not deemed sufficient >y at' least some of the Dunedin millers, who claim that with wheat-at the present price there is still a substantial loss on every ton of flour gristed. It is understood that the Master Bakers’ Association will meet next week, and there is every likelihood’ of a rise in the price of bread." The bakers argue that since they abstained from raising the price of bread when flour was advanced to £lO 10s, although fully entitled to do so according to their scale, they are now fully justified in charging 7d for-the 41b Ibaf.
