The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1907.

In view of the fact that the prej sent issue forms a unique and complete record of the celebration of Dominion Day both in Gisborne and throughout the colony, it has been decided to print a larger number than usual, so that those who wish to keep copies of the paper as souvenirs of this great historical event will not be disappointed. Telegraphic work was again greatly interfered with in consequence of the .breakage of the line on the Ilimutaka Range. A farewell public meeting to Brigadier Albiston and the party of officers who are at present conducting the self-denial campaign in Gisborne, will be held in the Salvation .Army Barracks on Tuesday evening. Tradesmen are notified that four new shops are to be erected on behalf of Mr. J. Erskino in Peel street, and will be available for lease. Full particuars can be obtained from Mr. H.. J. Brownlee, architect. Tlio annual fancy dress ball under, the auspices of Mrs. AV. Grey will be' held in His Majesty’s this evening to mark the breaking-up of the juvenile dancing class. The classes will be continued by Mrs. Grey next winter, commencing in April.

On Monday ovening Brigadier Albiston will hold a soldiers’ council at the Salvation Army Barracks. The Brigadier will address the soldiers of the local corps on various matters of importance connected with Army work, and will also make special reference to the self-denial scheme.

Tenders were received yesterday by Mr. H. J. Brownless, architect, for the concrete and drainage work in connection with the construction of the School Bath. The tenders were as follow:—J. Common £486, Webb and Sons £4BB 10s, Geo. Smith £640. No tender has yet been accepted.

The Self-denial Fund campaign at present being carried out by the Salvation Army will be continued tomorrow and on Sunday. To-morrow evening a special open-air meeting will be conducted by the visiting officers. On Sunday a musical service will take place in His Majesty’s Theatre at 3 p.m. and at the same place at 8.15 p.m. a missionary meeting will be held.

The musical entertainment in aid of the Catholic bazaar drew a large audience at His Majesty’s Theatre last evening. As on the previous night the items were all well received. A feature of the entertainment was the chorus of 40 who danced tho Cachuca and Gavotte from Sullivan’s opera the “The Gondoliers J’ The music, rendered by tho orchestra under the baton of Mr. M. Foster, was also greatly appreciated.

There was a fair attendance at the Salvation Army sale of work yesterday afternoon, and good business was done.. In the evening the band played selections outside and later inside the hall, which was packed, good business again being done at the stalls. This evening a display of magic lantern pictures will be given by Staff-captain AVard and graphophone selections will also be given, after which the sal© of work will proceed.

In , connection with the peculiar position that has arisen over the supply of refreshments at the recent hospital social, two well-known citizens have been served with a summons to answer a charge at the Police Court on Monday. These enthusiastic woi'kers for a good cause are solemnly charged that they did sell liquor, to wit, whisky and beer, which they.were not licensed to sell. It is understood that the cases will be defended-

The Turanganui Fishing Club went out to the Ariel reef yesterday, and enjoyed a whole day’s fishing. The Tuatea left the wharf at about 8 o’clock in the morning, and returned at 7 o’clock in the evening. When they reached the reef Captani Hawke found that - it was too rough to approach close, and the anchor was dropped some distance away. During the day one of the anchors was carried away. The party, in all, caught about 120 fish, and were thoroughly satisfied with the day’s outing. There was a large attendance at the Wesley Schoolroom last evening, when Air. 0. Pallc gave a magic lantern entertainment, in aid of the Ladies’ Guild. The views were of New Zealand scenery, and Air. Pallc, who lias visited most of the scenes shown, gave a graphic description of them. Tho Rev. Air. Griffin, on behalf of tho Ladies’ Guild, extended a hearty vote of thanks to Air. Palk for the interesting entertainment, and also to Air. Robb, who manipulated tho lantern slides. The proceedings terminated with the singing of tho Doxology.

Air. C. H. Ambridge presided over the annual meeting of the Cosmopolitan Club last evening. The balancosheet was of a satisfactory nature, and the club is only awaiting removal to the new premises, which will be shortly after the Now Year, to make a considerable advance in membership and status. The election of officers resulted : —President, Air. J. Sheridan; vice-president, Mr. AV. Webb; secretary, Air. T. Adair; treasurer, Air. R. T. Seymour; auditor, Air. J. Georgeson; committee, Messrs. A. Sawyer, F. Maher, G. B. Oman, J. Thomson, H. Martin, and J. F. Pettie.

The Druids’ Social held at Patutalii last night was a pronounced success, over a hundred couples bemg .present. In addition to, tho country brethren a large contingent went out from town. During the evening songs were rendered by Messrs. Gawn, Burrell, and AVallace. An excellent supper was provided by Mrs. Stevens, and Lang’s orchestra supplied the music. Mr. J. Green acted as secretary, and was ably assisted by a committee consisting of Alessrs. Al. Angland, J. Alilne, C. Breingan, and E. Sargent. Alessrs. S. J. Spiers, S. Lyons, H. Atkins, and S. AlcKenzio acted as Al.C.’s. Dancing was kept up till an early hour this morning, and the social wa6 voted one of tho most successful of the season.
