AUCKLAND, Oct. 17. An elderly man named Benjamin Clifton, a plumber, residing in Grey Lynn, was knocked down and killed by ia*tram while crossing Ponsonby road last, night. At the inquest on Andrew Wilkes, electrical engineer at the Tramway Works, i.t w-as stated that deceased’s wife had returned to England about two months ago. Their domestic relations were not. happy. The sergeant of police stilted the telephone message was received, presumably from diseased, to send an ambulance round about 10 o’clock, as soniething was happening, at the moment of telephoning. A verdict 'that- deceased had slio-t himself while temporarily deranged was returned.

One of the workmen, a mail named Michael Henry, was sitting on the grab holding a rope to which was attached a piece of timber that had fallen into the hopper. The grab chain carried away, and the grab with Henry on it fell into the hopper- In the act of falling the grab canted and buried him under the water, blit he was able to crawl out and was then sent to the hospital. It was found oil examination that Henry was severely injured internally, and that one of his ribs had been driven through the lung. Ho died at the hospital this morning.
