THE O’DOWD CASE.
[T6" THE EDITOR.] Sir,—-There are certain public questions in which it is not only tho privilege but. also the botinden-duty of every citizen to tako an active interest. ■. .y rerious charge has been made aga.u;; the management of the Gisborne t-i.v-pnal, in which it is alleged a boy, >.;•• i of a local resident. Ims lost a Jt g'as the result of neglect, if tin: charge be true, its seriousness cannot be exaggerated, and steps should lie at once taken to prevent a repetition of a similar happening. Those who sincerely he pied there might be some mis’itkc underlying the charge must have been painfully in doubt about the perfect management of the Hospital when no refutation appeared this morning. Whether the allegation be true or not remains to bo seen, but sufficient has been said to convince all who have tho welfare of the community at heart of tho necessity for a public investigation. It would bo a reltection on tlie intelligence of the people of this city, as .well as a noticeable example of their indiffere-nco to t-lieir own welfare, to allow tho matter to drop without probing it to the bottom; and I, for one, am in entire accord nice with the suggestion of your correspondent to call a public meeting to discuss the matter.—l am, etc., P. J. HASTINGS. Gisborne, Oct. 29.
