Arrangements are well in hand for tho celebration of the 21st anniversary of the local corps of the Salvation Army Under the direction ot Adjutant aiul Mrs Dickens the branch is making great- headway, and it lias been found necessary to enlarge the building in order to accommodate tho people. At a meeting of the Chess Club on Tuesday, the resignation of Mr. Cogar as secretary was accepted, Air. AVitty consenting to act until the annual meeting. It, was decided to apply for affiliation to the Now Zealand” Chess Association. Air. Salisbury was appointed to represent- the club at tho annual colonial tournament, which is to be held about Easter. It was decided to incorporate a draughts club with the club if sufficient’players offer. Considerable difficulty was experienced by tho constables last night while endeavoring to procure the ambulance stretcher for the removal of Air. O’Sullivan’s body to tho morgue. Constable Irwin applied for tho stretcher at tho Fire Brigade station before ho proceeded to the spot- where the body was found, and the daretaker said lie could lmvo it. Constable Pratt, when about to move the stretcher, however, ivas stopped by tho Superintendent (Air Townley) and forbidden to use it, tho Superintend dent, saying that it was not intended for cases of that.sort, but merely for sick persons or those who have met with accidents.
Mr. A. M. Pickfortl made a strong indictment lat last night’s smoke concert against “packing” of brass bands, stating that some bands sit the Christchurch contest played with numbers of men picked up in Christchurch, while one band even bad a strange conductor. The Gisborne band: Lad not been “packed”—the band at the contest was the band which played on the streets of Gisborne —and ho had no doubt that hut fur “packing” in other hands', the Gisborne band would have been higher on the list at the end. At the meeting of the Associttion held at the thru? lie protested, and had been told that the rules safeguarded bands in this respect. These ‘rules in the past had been ignored, but lie was assured they would be enforced in the future.

In acknowledging the presentation to him last night of a gold medal from the members of the City Band, Sir. Spurdlo suggested that all bandsmen after serving five years should lmvo their services recognised by being presented with a silver medal. This, lie thought, would lmvo the effect of keening men in the band together.
Captain Beero told tho City Band members last night of one cuuso of tho poorness of the Gisborne Rifles. During last yciar, lie said, tho corps lmd had to pay for tho renewal of 50 per cent of tho rifle barrels oil issue, and this although the authorities recognised that the barrels had .sinijily been worn out.
