BOWLING It is understood it is the intention of the Gisborne Club to close the list this afternoon of players desirous of representing the club at the Auckland tournament. The running championships of the New Zealand Athletic Union are to be competed at the Caledonian sports here during band contest week. February 24th to 28th. AXEMEN’S. CARNIVAL. Press Association. ELTHAM, November 20. Record entries were received for the Axemen’s Championship Carnival-, at Eltliam on December 26 and 27, being 15 above the- total of last year. For eleven events 249 axemen and sawyers have been nominated, and late entries are expected from Victoria and Tasmania. There are 50 entries for the Axeman’s Cup of £l4O, and 13 pairs for the Double-handed Sawing Championship. Miley, the Australian champion axeman and Thomas Pettit, the world’s champion sawyer, wiid compete at the carnaval. RIFLE-SHOOTING. VISITORS MAKE A DRAW. United Press Association—Copyright (Received 10 25 p.m., Nov . 20.) MELBOURNE, Nov. 20. The weather was fine and the wicket sound and good. The visitors, timed, to leave by the Sydney express, had only till 4.15 to pull up the deficit. Fighting a stubborn uphill battle they succeeded in making a draw of the match. With four wickets down for 115 the outlook was anything but promising. Hutchings and Rhodes-for the fifth wicket added 107 in just over an hour. Hutchings gave a. display of exceedingly forcible cricket, his score including a sixer and 16 fourers. For the ninth wicket Hardstafi and Barnes contributed a century, the latter contenting himself with keeping up has wicket while Hardstaff rattled up the runs. Scores: ENGLAND —2nd Inniiigs (contd.).
