I'A TRIP TO CHINATOAVN.” Mr. Howard Vernon, whose excellent work as principal comedian in Air. J. Cl. AVilliaanson’s Musical Comedy Company has made him « favorite with theatregoers, will commence a season of musical comedy at His Majesty’s Theatre on Thursday nxet, Boxing Night, when “A Trip to Chinatown” will be presented for the first time in Gisborne. This comedy, following on its remarkable success in London aud New York, bids fair to rival tlie always-running “Charlie’s Aunt.” After all, it is not so much the plot as the “dressings” which matter in musical comedy. Tlie adventures of AVelland Strong, the whimsical invalid, Ben Gay, the jolly old citizen who departs from the path of dignity lor a while, and the entrancing widow Airs. Guyer, provide an excuse for the introduction of comedy aud vocalism. Air. A 7 ernon is always able to tell a good story, sing tho funniest songs in liis droll fashion, and generally keep tilings going with a swing. He takes tho role of AVelland Strong with a good deal of success,, introducing several excellent numbers, one of the most popular being ‘‘They, take off their hats to tho King.” Ho gets excellent support from Miss Arinia Do Loitte, whose splendid soprano, accompanied by lively manner, enables her to hit the popular taste in .her contributions. Air. Vernon and Miss De Loitte are supported by a full company of favorite artists.
