In Wellington it was stated on one side that he was a gross criminal and on the other that lie was misrepresented. Cr. Kenway’s motion was practically putting a brand on him. The Chairman moved as an ante ailment that the letter bo acknowledg e]. stating that -nothing was going to lw done. Cr. Matthews moved that the letter be acknowledged. The Chairman’s amendment was carried. MOTION COLDLY RECEIVED IN HASTINGS. Press Association. HASTINGS, Dec. 20. The Borough Council last night received from the chairman of the Patangata County Council a letter covering the following resolution, passed at its last meeting:—“lt being reported that Mr. Keir Hardie intends visiting New Zealand, and in view of his recent utterances while in India, this Council is strongly of opinion that lie should receive no official -recognition In his public capacity as a" member of the British Legislature from any local body in the Dominion.”

The Hastings Council resolved that tbe letter be received, one Councillor stating that he would he sorry to say wliat lie thought of it.
