County Council a resolution was re ceived from the Patangata Co.unti i Council, urging that Mr. Keir Hari dio should receive no official -recogni : tion in his capacity as a member ol the British Legislature from any lo ; cal body in tlie Dominion. They i asked for support. j Cr. Lvsnar moved and Cr. Kenway that the Council comply. The Chairman said that there wai : no intention of giving him a reception. He said that it was not ar. j Cr. Lvsnar said that they should ! not let a firebrand like’ Mr. Hardie I go through the Empire. Cr. Matthews said that wliat war done here would not affect Mr. Hari die one iota. It had been denied 1 that the statements attributed to him ; in India had been made. Cr. Ken-way said there was nu i doubt that Mr. Hardie had been guilty of grossly seditious speeches, and their ordinary business should be pro : ceeded with. The Chairman 6aid he would rot suggest to other people to give ’fin the cold shoulder. In Wellington it was stated on one side that he was a gross criminal and on the other that lie was misrepresented. Cr. Kenway’s motion was practically putting a brand on him. The Chairman moved as an ante ailment that the letter bo acknowledg e]. stating that -nothing was going to lw done. Cr. Matthews moved that the letter be acknowledged. The Chairman’s amendment was carried. MOTION COLDLY RECEIVED IN HASTINGS. Press Association. HASTINGS, Dec. 20. The Borough Council last night received from the chairman of the Patangata County Council a letter covering the following resolution, passed at its last meeting:—“lt being reported that Mr. Keir Hardie intends visiting New Zealand, and in view of his recent utterances while in India, this Council is strongly of opinion that lie should receive no official -recognition In his public capacity as a" member of the British Legislature from any local body in the Dominion.”
The Hastings Council resolved that tbe letter be received, one Councillor stating that he would he sorry to say wliat lie thought of it.
