ENTERTAINMENTS.
HOWARD VERNON. The name of Howard Vernon brings to mind many happy evenings bright with mirth and music, and an array of charming comic operas. Olio cannot speak of Howard Vernon without remembering with pleasure his performances in “Patience,” “The Mikado,” “Pirates of Penzance,” “The Sorcerer,” and many other operas. In fact, Howard Vernon’s name is a household word throughout Australasia. The first comedy to bo presented, “A Trip to Chinatown,” has been an instantaneous success wherever produced, and no doubt a crowded house will welcomo this company to Gisborne on Boxing Night. Miss Vinia De Loitto, tho principal lady in the company, is considered one of the finest sopranos in Australia at the present time, having appeared several times with tho Sydney Philharmonic in connection with their festivals, so that Mr. Vernon has decided to give a grand concert on Christmas Night, when Miss De Loitto will sing some of the gems from the oratorios, assisted by the full strength of the company.
